Safari in Sarasota - Myakka Elephant Ranch

Safari in Sarasota - Myakka Elephant Ranch

You don’t have to travel to Africa or Asia to experience the majestic and wonderful of the world’s largest land animal.  Just a short drive from Sarasota is the Myakka Elephant Ranch, where you can get up close and personal with these gentle giants.

What is the Myakka Elephant Ranch?

Founded in 2018 by Lou Barreda, it is a unique conservation facility located in Myakka City, Florida.  It focuses on the welfare, conservation, and education of elephants.  The ranch is dedicated to the conservation of elephants and aims to educate the public about the challenges these magnificent animals face in the wild.  Visitors can participate in educational tours that provide insights into elephant behavior, biology, and conservation efforts.

Why Do They Do What They Do?

While attending the 16th International Elephant Conservation in South Africa, Lou Barreda decided to found a no-profit that was focused on global elephant conservation.  Here, they spread elephant conservation awareness so that others also become ambassadors for elephants in the wild.

Types of Experiences Available

The ranch offers guided tours where visitors can meet the resident elephants up close.  These tours provide an opportunity to learn about each elephant's personality, history, and care.  Guests may have the chance to participate in activities such as feeding the elephants, bathing them, and observing their daily routines.  The ranch provides numerous photo opportunities, allowing visitors to capture memorable moments with the elephants.

The ranch also offers private tours and can host special events such as birthdays, weddings, and corporate outings, providing a unique and unforgettable experience.  Special talks and presentations about elephant conservation and the threats facing these animals in the wild are sometimes part of the tour experience.

How are the Elephants Treated?

The ranch ensures that the elephants receive the highest standards of care, including proper nutrition, medical attention, and enrichment activities.  The facility often serves as a sanctuary for elephants that have been rescued or retired from circuses and other entertainment venues.  By visiting the Myakka Elephant Ranch, guests contribute to the conservation and welfare of elephants.  Funds from tours and events support the care of the resident elephants and global conservation initiatives.
