Tips to Help You Unplug While on Vacation

The world has become a very technical place to live, and this incredible technology is so easily accessible that we have the ability to get up-to-the-minute updates on everything from news alerts to sports scores and reviews.  It is no wonder why this instant access to virtually everything in the world can be so addicting.  However, there is a time and place for everything.  Vacations are not one of them.

So how can we unplug while on vacation?  How can we resist the urge to constantly check our phones?  It isn’t easy, but sometimes it’s just plain necessary.  Vacations are certainly one of those moments in life where we really need to unplug and be in the moment with those close to us.  In this article, we’ll show you how.

Stick to Your Plan to Unplug While on Vacation

Before you go on your trip, plan to use as little connectivity as possible.  There are some things that you will need to use your phone for, like digital tickets, travel info, and taking pictures, but once you make your plan, stick to it.  Make up your mind and don’t give in.

Tell Your Travel Companions About Your Plan

Once you tell others about your plan to unplug, you’ve made a commitment and they can call you out when you trip up.  If you tell others about your expectations, chances are they will make the same plan.  Unplugging becomes so much easier when everyone in your group commits to it.

Start Slowly Before Your Vacation

Before your departure, try cutting back on your connectivity little by little for a week.  By easing into it, you start getting your mind used to the fact that you are making a deliberate decision to get weaned off of constant connectivity.  Try going a half-hour between checking your messages.  The next day, try an hour, etc.  Once you are on vacation, it won’t be so stressful to stay unplugged.

Turn Off Your Notifications

Let’s face it; we’ve turned into a society that lives for the next ‘ding’ on our phones.  It’s hard to resist that next moment of instant gratification.  So turn those notifications off and leave them off throughout your vacation.  The people who want to spend some undivided time with you will be happy that you aren’t constantly interrupted.

Switching to Grayscale is Helpful

A reason we find our devices so addicting is these mini-computers deliver bold, vibrant colors.  These colors give our brain a beautiful little reward that it soon wants more of.  When you switch to grayscale, the entire screen experience becomes less addictive, which can make it easier to unplug.

Download an App that Limits Phone Usage

These apps limit the amount of time you are on your phone, and there are plenty to choose from.  The app keeps track and lets you know when you are about to hit the limit that you set in advance.  Some will even lock your phone for a time if you go over.

Use the Automatic Reply Function

You can do this for your email, voicemail, and many social media messengers.  Let everyone know you are on vacation and that you will get back to them when you return from your trip.

Unplugging during your vacation has many advantages.  It keeps your stress level down and allows you to connect with others around you.  It also helps you appreciate nature and other cultures that you visit.  You will probably sleep better too.  It’s amazing just how relaxing and refreshing it can be when detoxifying from technology.
