Unique Things to do Around Sarasota

Unique Things to do Around Sarasota

There’s plenty more than just beaches in the Greater Sarasota area.  In fact, there are a number of things to do here that you won’t find in other places in Florida, or for that matter, just about any other place.  If you are looking for some unique things to do around Sarasota, this guide is for you.

Mini Golf with Real Alligators

It’s one thing to putt-putt with statues of alligators, but it’s something else when the gators are living and breathing.  Smugglers Cove Adventure Golf advertises that you can mini-golf with real alligators, although the reptiles are contained in one area (a pond next to the gold course).  Still, it’s pretty awesome to watch the gators swim and sun themselves.   You can even purchase food for them at the concession stand.

Visit the Classic Car Museum

If you love cars, the Classic Car Museum should not be missed.  Car enthusiasts will find around 100 rare and vintage cars of every type, many of which were once owned by celebrities and distinguished figures.  Don’t forget to visit the museum’s gift shop for rare collectibles, books and memorabilia.

Treat Yourself to Amish Cooking

Located in the heart of Sarasota is Pinecraft, home to about 3,000 Amish residents.  It is also a winter vacation spot for people of the Amish and Mennonite faith.

Two Amish restaurants to try are Yoder’s and Der Dutchman.  Both eating establishments offer delicious, made-from-scratch cooking and fantastic pies and desserts.

See Molly the Mollusk

Molly the Mollusk is the nickname of the 27’ long giant squid located at Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium.  The cephalopod corpse was originally caught off the coast of New Zealand in 1999 and donated to Mote for permanent display.  It is amazing to see such a rare oceanic find right here in Sarasota.

Hunt for Ghosts on a Trolley Tour

Relax in comfort on an air-conditioned trolley and listen to entertaining and informative ghost stories about famous Sarasota murders.  You will visit haunted buildings and explore unsolved crimes in this spooky 90-minute nighttime tour.

Check Out Some Big Cats

The Big Cat Habitat and Gulf Coast Sanctuary is a non-profit organization that provides a safe and permanent home for exotic and domestic animals in need.  The sanctuary allows visitors to get up close to lions, tigers, bears, primates, and exotic birds.  There is a petting zoo and animal encounters are available.

Whether you’ve been to Sarasota once or a dozen times, there are still plenty of things that you have probably never seen or done.   Get ready to discover something new with these unique things to do around Sarasota.
